In
Crete it might prove hazardous to be born a dog.
Most
of the people living here still have a different approach towards animals than in
other parts of Europe.
|
| |
 |
|
Cats
are somewhat better off - at least they are not chained up.
The
worst fate is faced by the numerous strays which live on the leftovers of the
tourism industry from April until October, not much is known about the remaining
months (if they can manage to survive the winter they are often poisoned in the
spring clean up).
|
| |
The
Friends of Animals - Rethymno try to help in a practical way, always provided
there are enough funds. Puppies and injured or undernourished animals are cared for
and get medical attention. They are vaccinated, de-wormed, nursed back to health again
and possibly neutered. Equipped with the proper papers they are then ready to be
rehomed.
Since
the City of Rethymnon does not provide a shelter, the animals are being fostered in
private homes, which are increasingly more difficult to find.
|
|
 |
| |
|
Other
strays are neutered and released in the area they were found and preferably monitored
and fed by caring animal lovers in the neighbourhood.
|
| |
 |
|
Through
newspaper ads and rehoming-lists published at the local vets and pet shops we attempt
to rehome as many pets as possible in the Rethymnon area. The remaining ones are sent
to other European countries after about a month, when their vaccinations are
completed.
We
have no other choice for the simple reason, we have to make room for other animals in
need. Most of the dogs sent abroad will go again to private foster homes, just a few are
sent to (selected) shelters.
|
| |
|
Chances
for rehoming abroad are very good. Due to their bad experiences from early childhood on,
the dogs taken in by animal welfare organizations have proved to be very grateful and
easily adapt to their new lifes.
|
| |
The
pictures on this page are from animals taken in and rehomed by
Friends of Animals.
If
you click on one of the pictures, a silde show will start, and you can see some of the
animals in their original surroundings. Nothing really dreadful, because we do not want
to tell horror stories, just enough to give you an idea of some of our everyday encounters.
|
|
 |
| |
|
Due
to airline regulations we need an escort for the animal's transport abroad.
|
| |
Please
use this
form
if you would like to volunteer as an escort, or this
form
if you want to adopt a pet.
|
| |
 |
|
Adoption
available to EU countries. Although not impossible, we do not recommend
adoption to the UK, Ireland, Sweden and Norway due to strict and lengthy quarantine
regulations.
For
up-to-date photos of animals for adoption, please view our
photo album.
Often
tourists offer to help during their holidays. If you want to do the same, please contact us by
e-mail:
all offers of help are welcome.

| |
Our
association is actively supported by
Noah's Ark Crete
e.g. by food donations and free neutering of the animals at their shelter
Nerokouro close to Hania.
|
| |
We
also receive a substantial annual grant from the
Greek Animal Welfare Fund (GAWF),
for sterilizations at local vets and education programs.
However,
there is never enough money to achieve what we have planned. The costs for vaccinations,
operations, medicine, microchips, vaccination books and transport of the animals are
tremendous. Therefore Friends of Animals - Rethymno are thankful for every donation,
which will guarantee our continuing volunteer work for the animals in need.
|
|
 |
| |
|
Because
of the amount of work our volunteers have to deal with in their spare time, the actual
and long-term goal of our association is sometimes neglected: to inform and raise awareness
of animal needs in Greece. To work with the Greek people, especially the children, so that
barrel dogs, puppies in rubbish bins, poisoned cats and dogs and half starved strays will
be pictures of the past.
